Why chip depth matters
A chip can sit in the clear coat, reach colour, expose primer or reveal metal. Each level changes how the affected area needs to be prepared and protected.
The workshop checks the chip edge and surrounding paint as well as the centre of the mark.
- Grey primer or exposed metal
- Rust staining
- Paint lifting around the chip
- Clusters of chips on a forward-facing panel
The next step after a chip inspection
An isolated chip can require a different approach from a heavily affected bonnet edge or bumper. The assessment defines whether targeted treatment, SMART repair or a broader paint route should be discussed.
Do not rely on a touch-up product to diagnose depth or corrosion risk.
